Every person experiences Reiki differently. Some first notice warmth, relaxation, or subtle sensations of energy moving through the body. Others notice changes in their sleep, emotions, or overall sense of well-being. For some, learning Reiki also brings a deeper awareness of themselves and a new way of relating to the world around them.
Here are some experiences shared by people who have received Reiki healing from me or attended my Reiki workshops.

“
“It was an amazing experience.”
“I had been experiencing persistent soreness in my lower back. Mei gave me a full Reiki session, spending some extra time around the areas that were bothering me. When her hands were there, I felt a lot of heat and a slight sense of pressure. The strongest sensation was behind my knees, where I could feel something like waves of electrical current moving through. By the next day, the soreness in my back was almost gone. It was an amazing experience.”

“My stomach felt warm and very comfortable.”
“I often suffer from stomach ulcers, and when the pain gets bad, I break out in a cold sweat. Mei gave me Reiki around my stomach twice. During the sessions, my stomach felt warm and very comfortable, and the pain gradually eased until I could barely feel it. I even fell asleep during the session and slept really well that night.”

“It felt as though a lot of accumulated fatigue had been released.”
“Mei gave me three full Reiki sessions, and each time I could clearly feel an electrical-like sensation of energy. The second session was particularly strong. Over the following two days, I slept a lot and felt as though much of the fatigue that had built up in my body over time had been cleared and released.”

“My cough eased considerably afterwards.”
“I had been coughing on and off for several months. Cough medicine didn’t seem to help much, and spicy food would always make it worse. Mei gave me a focused Reiki session around my throat, and my cough eased considerably afterwards.”

Reiki Level 1
One of the most rewarding parts of teaching Reiki is seeing what happens after students leave the classroom and begin bringing Reiki into their everyday lives.
For some, it becomes a simple way to slow down and care for themselves each day. For others, it becomes something they can share with people they love. And sometimes, the practice gradually changes the way they experience themselves and the world around them.

“Every time I practice Reiki on myself, I can relax very deeply.”
“After learning Reiki Level 1, giving myself Reiki helps me relax deeply and fall asleep very quickly. I’ve also become more sensitive to energy. A few times while sitting in meditation, I could feel a warm current of energy rising through my body towards the top of my head.”

“I feel more able to let things unfold naturally.”
“Since learning Reiki, I feel much less anxious, and the amount of deep sleep I get at night has increased. I also don’t feel the same need to control things as much as I used to. I feel more relaxed and more able to let things unfold naturally.”

Reiki Level 2
Reiki Level 2 introduces distance Reiki and a wider range of ways to work with Reiki. Some students also find that their sensitivity to energy and their confidence in working with it deepen as their practice develops.

“It greatly strengthened my awareness and capacity to hold space.”
“In Level 2, we learned many practical ways to use Reiki in everyday life, such as working with small manifestations and clearing the energy of a new home. We also explored broader applications of Reiki, including working with our relationships with parents, partners, and children. It greatly strengthened my awareness and capacity to hold space.”

“Compared with Level 1, I feel a much greater sense of clarity.”
“I’ve become much more sensitive to energy and more confident in using Reiki where I feel energy is blocked, allowing it to flow more evenly through my body. Compared with Level 1, I feel a much greater sense of clarity.”

“Now I have a way to care for my parents even when I’m not physically with them.”
“My mother told me she had been struggling to sleep recently, so last night I sent her 20 minutes of distance Reiki. This morning she called me excitedly and said she had slept really well. My mother has struggled with sleep for a long time, so the difference felt very noticeable to her. Although I don’t live near my parents, I now have a way to care for them and be there for them through Reiki. I feel incredibly grateful and happy that I can give them something in this way.”

Is it just a placebo effect? · 这些变化,只是心理作用吗?
“How do you know it isn’t just a placebo effect?”
When I talk about the effects of Reiki, this is one of the questions I hear most often. I used to wonder the same thing myself. So, out of curiosity, I decided to experiment.
I carried out three simple observations using flowers, exploring three different ways of working with Reiki: hands-on Reiki, distance Reiki, and a Reiki symbol. I then observed the flowers that received Reiki alongside those that did not.
01Hands-On Reiki
Singapore · one week
Two flowers were kept under similar conditions. One regularly received hands-on Reiki, while the other did not. I observed how they changed over the course of a week.
02Distance Reiki
Singapore → Shanghai · four days
This time, while I was in Singapore, I sent distance Reiki to a flower in Shanghai and observed it alongside another flower that did not receive Reiki.
03Reiki Symbol
Xinjiang · three days
For the third experiment, I selected one flower from a group of five and sent a Reiki symbol to that flower, then observed all five over the following three days.
Across all three experiments, I noticed a similar pattern: the flowers that received Reiki appeared to stay vibrant for longer and retain brighter colours.
A student’s wheat seeds
Six days · two groups
One of my Reiki students was curious about the placebo question too, so she decided to conduct a simple experiment of her own using wheat seeds.
She divided the seeds into two groups and observed them over several days. The first group received 5–10 minutes of Reiki each day, while the second group received no Reiki.
By Day 4, she noticed that the second group had begun to spoil and develop an unpleasant smell. By Day 6, she reported that the Reiki-treated group still had no noticeable odour, while the untreated group had already begun to rot.
Of course, these were simple personal experiments carried out out of curiosity, not scientific studies conducted under rigorously controlled conditions. I therefore don’t present them as scientific evidence that Reiki works.
But they did leave me with an interesting question:
If it were all just a placebo effect, what about the plants?
When it comes to Reiki, I don’t think you need to rush to believe in it — or to dismiss it. Experience it for yourself. Explore it for yourself. Then form your own answer.
The experiences shared above are personal accounts from individual clients and students. Everyone may experience Reiki differently. Reiki is a complementary wellness practice and is not intended to replace professional medical diagnosis or treatment.
